Customers hoping to stock up on groceries yesterday at the Bassett's Market at 5700 Monroe St. in Sylvania's Starlite Plaza had to shop elsewhere.

The store, operated by Port Clinton grocer Mike Bassett, has closed after less than two years of business.

"We could never get it off the ground," said Connie Roberts, marketing director. "It's a very tired shopping center and there is a lot of competition in the area."

Most of the store's 40 employees will be transferred to other Bassett stores. Those, including one in Perrysburg, are unaffected by the closing, Ms. Roberts said.

The pharmacy of the shuttered store will remain open two weeks. Customers can arrange to pick up bakery and deli orders by calling the Sylvania store at 882-0051 and entering 0 for the operator.

The Perrysburg and Sylvania stores had been part of the Farmer Jack chain, which left Toledo. Bassett's also has stores in Port Clinton and Bellevue.
