Area food workers local voting in new election

10/18/2007

Members of one of Toledo s largest labor locals are voting on a president and five vice presidents after national officials of the union overturned the results of a June election.

Ballots were mailed Tuesday to 8,500 members of Local 911 of the United Food & Commercial Workers and are to be returned and counted by Nov. 10, said Doug Van Osdale, election chairman.

Officials of the union, which represents grocery workers and other food industry employees, ordered the new election after it was determined that some campaign literature for the incumbents was improperly prepared at the union hall, although candidates used personal funds to pay for its mailing and did not intentionally or knowingly utilize union resources to further their campaigns.

Jeff Stephens is the incumbent president and Dennis Dierker is running against him.
