A central Toledo man accused of assaulting a police sergeant and trying to steal his handgun was indicted yesterday by a Lucas County grand jury.

Arthur Sailes, Jr., 41, of 121 Gibbons St. was charged with assault and aggravated robbery. He was being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $20,000 bond set in Toledo Municipal Court.

According to police, Sgt. Sean Jones approached Sailes, who was walking near Airline Avenue and Wayne Street carrying a black purse shortly after 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9, to investigate a possible theft.

Sergeant Jones ordered Sailes to stop, but he fled into his home, where the sergeant grabbed him, police said.

The suspect pulled away from the sergeant and attempted to take his handgun during a struggle. The suspect then took Sergeant Jones' radio and began striking him in the head and face, police said.

Sergeant Jones struck Sailes in the head multiple times with open-hand stuns. Another officer arrived, hit the suspect in the abdomen with several closed-hand stuns, and arrested him, police said.
