Man accused in slaying to get 2nd sanity evaluation

2/15/2008

A Toledo man accused of shooting his longtime girlfriend and then holding police at bay for several hours will be evaluated by a second doctor to determine his state of mind at the time of the incident.

Lawrence Jameson, 46, of 2423 South Holland-Sylvania Rd. is charged with one count each of aggravated murder and murder, both with firearm specifications.

He is charged in the Aug. 25 fatal shooting of Tammy Bowlin Macrae, 46.

During a pretrial hearing yesterday, Mr. Jameson's attorney said he intends to file a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. As part of the plea, Robert Scott requested Judge Frederick McDonald to order a second evaluation.

Ms. Macrae was found shot to death in Mr. Jameson's apartment about 9:15 p.m. Mr. James was arrested after a four-hour standoff with police and charged in her death.

Judge McDonald ruled earlier this year that Mr. Jameson was competent to stand trial and that his statements made to police both during and after the standoff will be admitted as evidence at his trial.

Mr. Scott has until Tuesday to file the "not guilty by reason of insanity" plea. Judge McDonald set a March 24 trial date.
