North Toledo man guilty of assault on pregnant girlfriend

2/22/2008

A North Toledo man was convicted yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend after being accused of breaking into her residence, beating her, and trying to drown her in a bathtub.

Jeremiah Reid, 20, of 324 Elm St., pleaded no contest to one count of felonious assault and was found guilty by Judge Frederick McDonald.

An additional charge of felonious assault and one count of aggravated burglary will be dismissed March 11 when Reid is sentenced.

Reid, who was being held in the county jail, faces up to eight years in prison.

County Assistant Prosecutor Mark Herr said Reid went to the home of Treeva Lampkin, 23, of 2908 Chestnut St., to discuss her pregnancy when an argument erupted. The conversation began on the front porch and progressed inside after he forced his way into the home.

Reid hit Ms. Lampkin with a heavy glass ashtray, causing a severe gash in her forehead. He then followed her to the bathroom, where she went to try to get away from him. After a struggle over the bathtub, Reid pushed her under the water, which had been running, Mr. Herr said.

Ms. Lampkin escaped and ran to a neighbor's house, where she called police.
