Arraignment set for officer in drug case

2/29/2008

A corrections officer recently placed on paid administrative leave from the Toledo Correctional Institution will be arraigned March 11 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on charges that he took marijuana into the prison.

Jeffery Maier, 50, of 2411 Cheyenne Blvd. was indicted Wednesday by a county grand jury on one count each of illegal conveyance of drugs onto the grounds of a detention facility and trafficking in marijuana.

Mr. Maier, who was arrested last Friday at the correctional facility, remains free on a supervised recognizance bond.

He faces up to six years in prison if convicted on both charges.

Authorities said Mr. Maier had about four ounces of marijuana on him when he was arrested.

He has been employed by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction since 2003 and transferred to the Toledo facility at 2001 East Central Ave. in 2007.
