Man accused in '02 beating case pleads not guilty

After being declared competent to stand trial and not suitable for a not guilty by reason of insanity plea, Kevin Clapsaddle was arraigned Monday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Clapsaddle, 23, of 470 Parker Ave., pleaded not guilty to one count of felonious assault. He is charged with the July 8, 2002, beating of David Dusseau in his home at 440 Raymer Blvd.

Mr. Clapsaddle, who remains free on his own recognizance, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Monday, Judge Linda Jennings ruled that he did not fall within the requirements of the insanity plea. She based her decision on an evaluation report from the Court Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Toledo.

Judge Jennings set an April 21 trial date.

Also charged in the felonious assault case is Raymond Cox, 22, who is serving nine years in the Allen Correctional Institution, Lima, Ohio, for a 2002 involuntary manslaughter conviction in the death of Craig Coulter, 41.

Cox also is facing murder charges in the deaths of Theodore Goodacre, 53, and Reginald Darnell Jones, 37.

Authorities said Mr. Clapsaddle and Cox hit Mr. Dusseau in the head several times with a pipe. The left side of his body is paralyzed and he lost his right eye as a result of the beating.
