The Andersons acquires Florida fertilizer firm

The Andersons Inc., of Maumee, said yesterday it has acquired a specialty fertilizer firm that primarily serves the citrus and agricultural industries in the southeast United States. The price was not disclosed.

Douglass Fertilizer & Chemical Inc., of Maitland, Fla., will become part of The Andersons Plant Nutrient Group, expanding the agribusiness markets beyond its traditional Midwest crops and into the specialty crops grown in Florida and the Caribbean.

Douglass Fertilizer had 2007 revenues totaling $48 million and distributes 140,000 tons of nutrients annually that are used on fruits, vegetables, citrus, pastures, and sugarcane. It has five production facilities in Florida and a distribution terminal in Puerto Rico.
