East Toledo stabbing suspect to be in court next week

A 17-year-old boy accused of stabbing an East Toledo man in the neck Saturday will remain in the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center until he appears before a judge next week, authorities said.

Meanwhile, the boy's mother, who authorities said drove him away in her minivan after the attack, is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $10,000 bond set during an arraignment yesterday in Toledo Municipal Court, records show.

Tyler Moore, of 2643 Eastgate Rd., Apt. 4, is charged with delinquency in connection with felonious assault.

He appeared before a juvenile magistrate yesterday, and a pretrial hearing was scheduled for June 10.

The boy's mother, Shelly Moore, 39, of the same Eastgate address, is charged with obstructing official business.

The victim, David Whitner, 47, of 1123 Freedom St., was in serious condition last night in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said. The knife apparently damaged a major artery, police have said.

The teenager is accused of kicking Mr. Whitner's fence and agitating his dog about 6:50 p.m. Saturday.

When Mr. Whitner came outside and told the boy to stop, the suspect screamed at Mr. Whitner and threatened to beat him up, police said. Mr. Whitner walked off his porch and approached the fence where the boy was standing, police said.

The Moore boy is accused of opening the gate and stabbing Mr. Whitner in the neck. He then fled to 1105 Freedom, where he and his mother were preparing to move in, police said.

The boy told his mother what he had done and she drove him away in her minivan, police said.

The knife believed used in the attack was found by police in Perrysburg, apparently thrown out of the window onto Locust Street, police said.
