North Toledo grandmother gets probation

A North Toledo woman charged with stabbing her 22-year-old granddaughter in the chest in April was sentenced yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to five years probation.

Mildred McNair, 58, of 630 Walnut St. pleaded no contest and was found guilty June 12 of aggravated assault, which carries a maximum punishment of 18 months in prison.

Her attorney, Yvonne Wojtas, told Judge Charles Doneghy that her client was not on her medication at the time of the incident and since has regulated her medications and entered treatment programs.

Judge Doneghy said he intended to send McNair to prison, but the victim requested community control.

"You have to be responsible for [your medications]," the judge said. "I'm not going to let you go off your medications so you can hurt people."

Authorities said McNair and the victim, Katherine Hayes, were at 720 Locust St. on April 23 when Ms. Hayes told others who were present that her grandmother was crazy.

Overhearing what was said, McNair became angry and stabbed her granddaughter, authorities said. She was arrested later that day at her home.

As part of her probation, McNair is to stay on her medications, complete appropriate treatment programs, and complete a GED program. Judge Doneghy prohibited contact with the victim until further notice from probation officials.
