Toledo man guilty of falsifying tax returns

7/11/2008

A Toledo man accused of preparing false income tax returns that resulted in more than $160,000 in refunds was found guilty on five charges yesterday by a federal jury.

Martin Jamison had a three-day trial in U.S. District Court in Toledo on four counts of aiding and assisting in filing of false tax returns and one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States.

He and his co-defendant, Jennifer Thomas, were indicted in 2007, and charged with preparing 35 false tax returns for 26 people for tax years 2002 through 2004.

The refunds ranged from under $1,000 to more than $10,000, according to the indictment.

Jamison was accused of recruiting customers and supplying names and Social Security numbers of false dependents to Thomas, who prepared the returns and filed them electronically from her apartment.

Thomas entered a plea agreement with the government in August and testified against Jamison.

Judge David Katz has not set a sentencing date.
