8 cooling centers open for senior citizen relief

Senior citizens seeking relief from the heat today may visit any of eight emergency cooling centers established by the Area Office on Aging of Northwest Ohio.

The Chester Zablocki Senior Center, 3015 Lagrange St.; the East Toledo Family Center, 1020 Varland Ave., and the James W. Hancock Senior Center, 5760 Bayshore Rd., Oregon, will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be the Mayores Senior Center, 2 Aurora Gonzales Drive, and the Maumee Senior Center, 2430 South Detroit Ave., Maumee. Open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be the Sylvania Senior Center, 7140 West Sylvania Ave., Sylvania. Open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be the Eleanor Kahle Senior Center, 1315 Hillcrest Drive, and the Margaret Hunt Senior Center, 2121 Garden Lake Pkwy. The Zablocki center also will be open from noon to 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Temperatures may reach 93 today, the Cleveland office of the National Weather Service forecasts. Highs will be about 90 tomorrow and about 86 Sunday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms both days. The high yesterday at Toledo Express Airport was 92, seven degrees short of the record of 99 set in 1931.
