9/5/2008

The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse is in the running to be named most deserving among historic lighthouses of winning new windows and doors in an online contest.

Online voting at jeld-wen.com/lighthouse closes at 3 a.m. Monday.

The contest is sponsored by JELD-WEN Inc. of Klamath Falls, Ore., which will supply custom windows and doors to the lighthouse named most reliable. The winner will be determined by a panel that will weigh vote results, need, and overall restoration programs.

The 104-year-old Toledo Harbor Lighthouse was in fourth place among 12 finalists in the most recent vote results released. Toledo trailed the Grand Traverse Lighthouse in Michigan, the Bodie Island Light Station in North Carolina, and the New Canal Lighthouse in Louisiana.

"This is the opportunity for a great historic structure in great waters to make Toledo and the area shine," Sandy Bihn, president of Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society said.

"I don't think Michigan should be beating Ohio. This is football season."
