BGSU student released after report of shot fired on campus
11/7/2008BOWLING GREEN A Bowling Green State University student apprehended and questioned after a gunshot was heard on campus early Friday has been "released and not charged related to the incident," according to BGSU Spokesman Dave Kielmeyer.
I"We can t comment further because the investigation is ongoing, however there is no reason to believe this incident posed a threat to the campus community," he said.
No firearms or evidence that a gun had been fired were found in the area where the campus police officer heard the shot about 6:30 a.m.
The officer patrolling campus heard a gunshot near the field house on campus and immediately responded, Mr. Kielmeyer said.
In less than five minutes, the officer had the person in custody.
No one was injured in the incident that occurred in Lot 12, the on-campus student parking lot north of Merry Street and west of Perry Field House, the spokesman said.
The university activated its BG Alert system, sending text messages and posting information on its Web site, www.bgsu.edu.
The first notice was posted at 7:05 a.m. letting students and staff know that there was a shot fired in the parking lot, and a second notice posted an hour later informed that the suspect was in custody and campus was secure.
There are about 3,500 people signed up for the BG Alert messages, Mr. Kielmeyer said.
In addition to the university police department, Bowling Green city police and the Ohio Highway Patrol responded to campus as part of a standard mutual aid response, Mr. Kielmeyer said.
A week ago, the University of Toledo also had a situation in which it used its emergency notification system.
Two students were stabbed during an altercation Oct. 31 near the entrance of the Classroom Center on the Scott Park campus.
Anthony Jackson, 18, and John Watson, 19, were treated and released from the UT Medical Center that day.
Two text messages were sent out about the incident and informing students and staff that the Scott Park campus was closed.
