Deputies discover ton of marijuana in truck

LASALLE, Mich. Michigan State Police discovered more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of more than $3 million stashed in a truckload of plastic pellets Sunday after a motor-carrier officer pulled the rig over on northbound I-75 in Monroe County for a suspected weight violation.

During a subsequent safety inspection at the scales in LaSalle Township, the officer observed irregularities in the load and summoned the Monroe County Sheriff s Department s canine unit to assist with a search of the truck, troopers at the state police s Monroe post.

The driver, a resident of Texas, was arrested and was being held yesterday in the county jail. His identity was withheld pending arraignment in the First District Court in Monroe, troopers said.
