FINDLAY The University of Findlay nearly doubled its food collection from the year before as part of Cans Across America, a nationwide effort to break the world record for a one-day food drive.

The university on Wednesday collected 12,642 pounds of canned goods, up from the 6,544 pounds collected in 2007.

The national numbers are not yet known. Participating campuses have until Thursday to submit their results to Sodexo, a university dining service company coordinating the drive.

The Guinness World Record for the largest food drive by a noncharitable organization in a 24-hour period stands at 396,832.07 pounds.
