Bowling Green gets $4.16M loan to update water system

BOWLING GREEN Bowling Green has obtained a $4.16 million loan from the state to draw more water from the Maumee River when pollution levels are low.

The money will be used to install an additional intake and pump station by late 2009. The existing intake was built in 1950 and cannot pump water fast enough to fill the city s reservoir.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said it only allows water to be pumped from the river at certain times due to turbidity and nitrate pollution. The nitrates come largely from farm runoff.

The new structures will be about 700 feet northeast of the existing intake, the state agency said.
