Old Newsboys to collect donations for the needy

12/4/2008

The Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association will continue a holiday tradition tomorrow with the organization s annual paper sale.

Members, with their familiar red buckets, will be on street corners and in front of businesses asking for donations.

The Old Newsboys, founded in 1929, focus on providing shoes and coats to disadvantaged children, distributing food baskets, and providing college scholarships to high school seniors. Since its founding, the group has provided more than $7 million to families in northwest Ohio, officials said.

The goal for this year is $220,000. Last year, just more than $200,000 was raised.

The all-volunteer group has no administrative costs, and all funds collected are used to help the needy.

We are expecting a record number of requests from people who will be in need of shoes and coats, said David Hendricks, the group s secretary. It s a difficult year and we really need for people to dig in.
