Golf carts will be allowed on city streets of Fremont

12/5/2008

FREMONT - City Council Thursday night approved an ordinance allowing modified golf carts to be driven on city streets.

The vote was 6-1. Councilman Larry Jackson voted no.

The measure, initiated by resident Lacey Black as a way to save money on gasoline, is similar to those presented in several other Ohio communities earlier this year in response to dramatically rising prices at the pump.

Mr. Jackson said he did not see a need for the measure since gas prices have dropped in recent months, and he fears golf carts on city streets will create a safety hazard for everyone on the road.

"People are not used to seeing them on the streets, and I'm just concerned it will cause a bigger problem than we're looking for," he said.

Ohio law allows golf carts and all motor vehicles to be driven on state roads and highways as long as no local laws prohibit them and they comply with all laws and safety guidelines governing more traditional motor vehicles, such as having a rear-view mirror, working headlights, and a license plate. Drivers also must have insurance and vehicle registration.

The ordinance goes into effect in 30 days.
