Port Authority to seek $3 million grant to clean up former factory

Demolition and cleanup of a former rubber-products factory along Swan Creek near downtown Toledo would be funded by a $3 million state grant that the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority s board of directors has agreed to seek.

Voting 11-0 with two members absent, the port board on Thursday morning directed interim president Paul Toth to apply to the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund for money to remove contamination from the Plabell Rubber factory site on South St. Clair Street. The plant closed in 2006.

The site is part of a stretch of Swan Creek for which Tetra Tech Inc., of Pasadena, Calif., in April announced redevelopment plans for a $300 million, mixed-use riverwalk. The company holds options to buy 25 city-owned parcels, including the Erie Street Market, for $4.2 million.

During its meeting Thursday morning, the port board also re-elected, by acclamation, its chairman, William Carroll, and vice chairman, Opie Rollison.
