Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner's wife. Amy, is scheduled to undergo surgery this morning to repair a broken left wrist.

Mrs. Finkbeiner said last night the outpatient procedure would leave her with a metal plate permanently implanted in her left arm. The surgery will be done at the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly the Medical College of Ohio Hospital.

Mrs. Finkbeiner, 49, said she was injured on Christmas Eve when she fell on the icy steps of her South Toledo home.

"I was in a hurry, and out the door I go. I fell on the first step and landed on the sidewalk face forward. All of my body weight fell on my left arm, tearing tendons and muscles up to my rotator cuff," she explained.

She said the break has not healed properly. She said she has severe pain extending the length of her arm.

Mrs. Finkbeiner said she suffers from osteoarthritis, which attacks the cartilage in her joints, and is predisposed to bone fractures. Nevertheless, she said she was optimistic and in good spirits as she anticipated her surgery.

"My bones may be weak, but my spirit and determination are strong," she said.
