Grand jury indicts teen in shooting death of youth

A 17-year-old Toledo youth recently certified to stand trial as an adult for the shooting death Dec. 28 of a teenager was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury yesterday on murder charges.

Deshawn McCardell, of 3126 Franklin Ave., was charged with aggravated murder with a gun specification, murder with a gun specification, and tampering with evidence. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.

The McCardell youth is charged with shooting Antonyo Phillips, 15, of West Toledo. The younger teen was shot in the back at about 2 a.m. while walking with his cousins near Lagrange and East Streicher streets in North Toledo.

He was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center about 30 minutes later.

The McCardell youth, who will turn 18 next month, had been held in the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center until being certified as an adult on Jan. 6. He has since been held in the jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
