DEFIANCE A 78-year-old man has died in a hospital after being struck by a sport-utility vehicle Saturday on Defiance County Road 424 in Richland Township, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Richard Demuth, of Defiance, was airlifted to Toledo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day, a hospital spokesman said.

Mr. Demuth was starting to cross the road in front of his residence in the 26500 block of Road 424 about 3:05 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound SUV driven by Theresa Rosebrock, 48, also of Defiance. Ms. Rosebrock was trying to swerve to the left to avoid collision when the right side of the vehicle struck Mr. Demuth, according to troopers at the patrol s Defiance post.

Ms. Rosebrock was not hurt in the accident, which remained under investigation, troopers said.
