Student teams compete to devise healthful lunch

1/19/2009

Area students are competing to develop a healthful lunch that all elementary schoolchildren will like.

The students in grades 10-12 from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan are finalists in ProMedica Health System s Lunch 101: Food for Thought scholarship program, which offers $5,000 scholarships.

The goal is to help combat childhood obesity.

The winning team will be announced Jan. 31 after a judging event at Toledo Hospital from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The teams will deliver presentations of up to 10 minutes, prepare their meals for a taste test, and demonstrate the exercise portion of their program.

They will be evaluated on nutritional content, presentation, and how their program will appeal to elementary students.

Each winning team member will receive a $5,000 college scholarship and a $1,000 award for their school s health and science curriculum. The winning lunch program will be implemented at Toledo-area schools.

Participating students are from Toledo, Perrysburg, Archbold, Fremont, Delta, Monroe, and Adrian.
