1st female snow leopard at the Toledo Zoo dies

1/20/2009

The Toledo Zoo reported last night that its first female snow leopard, Tian, died Sunday after a lengthy illness.

A necropsy the animal equivalent of an autopsy performed Monday did not reveal the cause of death.

More tests are being done, the zoo said.

The leopard, which was 10, had shown symptoms of various liver and gastrointestinal problems over the past year. The zoo said it had been consulting with a number of outside experts about the cat s health.

It had been tentatively diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and had undergone a number of procedures, including exploratory surgery, in an attempt to pinpoint health problems.

The facility still has a male snow leopard, Nikko.
