Bail $1M for woman in North Toledo slaying

A woman accused of murder, aggravated burglary, and aggravated robbery this month involving an 83-year-old Toledo woman has been ordered held in jail on a $1 million bond.

Mandi Abdo, 25, of 1248 Yates St., who is charged in the Feb. 6 crime at the North Toledo home of Cecelia Sobecki, was arraigned Monday in Toledo Municipal Court. Ms. Abdo s preliminary hearing was set for Monday.

Ms. Sobecki, of 567 Austin St., died Feb. 8 in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. The Lucas County coroner ruled her death a homicide. Police said she was pushed to the floor twice when she refused to hand over money.

During the arraignment in front of Judge Robert Christiansen, Ms. Abdo stared at the floor most of the time.

Her family members left the courtroom immediately after the arraignment, refusing any comment.

Family members of the victim were not in the courtroom.

Ms. Adbo was a suspect in a couple of other burglaries that occurred during the past several weeks when police put out a Crime Stopper request seeking information about Ms. Sobecki s death, authorities said.

She became a suspect in Ms. Sobecki s death after police said they received several calls.

Aware that police were looking for her, Ms. Adbo called investigators and made an appointment to be interviewed by them, Toledo police Sgt. Phil Toney said.

A lengthy interview took place Friday night, after which she was arrested and charged in the case, the sergeant said.

In October, 1998, Ms. Abdo, who at the time was a runaway 15-year-old foster child, was shot in the back during a dispute with a 19-year-old man, according to an earlier story in The Blade.

Wanted at the time on two petty theft warrants for allegedly shoplifting candy and personal hygiene products, she failed to appear for a hearing that month in Lucas County Juvenile Court.

Instead, she ran away, The Blade story said.

She s not violent. She s addicted to the streets, said Felissa Parker, her foster mother at the time.

In the story, she described the girl as generally well behaved and conscientious about school and her chores.
