TIFFIN - A three-alarm fire damaged a food production plant in Tiffin on Thursday morning. The fire started beneath a deep fryer about 8:30 a.m., prompting the evacuation of about 40 employees.

The fire spread to the roof and to a storage room filled with onions and cooking oil, which fueled the flames. Tiffin Fire Chief William Ennis said about a quarter of the 55,000-square-foot building was damaged.

The fire at Fry Foods, 99 Maule Rd., just north of the city, did not result in any injuries.

The family-owned and operated business specializes in breaded and battered appetizers, according to its Web site. Products included mozzarella sticks, cheese cubes, and onion rings.

Fry Foods was founded in Tiffin in 1961.
