Toledo police officer killed in crash on U.S. 23

An off-duty Toledo police officer was killed in a fiery crash in Sylvania Township early Monday morning, authorities said.

Roger Rettig, 57, who was appointed to the department in March, 1979, was pronounced dead at the scene. He worked in the directed patrol unit.

Mr. Rettig was southbound on U.S. 23 about 1 a.m. approaching the I-475 eastbound exit ramp when the vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck an exit sign, and continued into several trees.

After the impact, the SUV rolled over and caught fire.

Official identification of the body will be made by the Lucas County coroner s office.

The crash remains under investigation.
