LONDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. A 12-year-old boy from Saline, Mich., died Saturday afternoon after crashing a dirt bike on a private motocross track here in Monroe County and being hit by another rider's bike, the county sheriff's office said in a statement.

Matthew Ulrich was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy lost control of his bike in loose sand on top of a hill, prompting him to lay the bike on his side. While picking up the bike Laura Weiss, 19, of Monroe, crashed into him, sheriff deputies said.

Ms. Weiss, who wasn't injured in the crash, was riding behind the boy on the same jump when her bike landed on top of him, deputies said. The track is located about 30 miles north of Toledo.

Both operators were wearing protective gear, including helmets. The crash is under investigation.
