Maumee schools to cut 10 jobs next year

3/31/2009

Ten Maumee City Schools employees have been notified that their jobs are ending.

Nancy Sayre, district spokesman, said Superintendent Greg Smith notified the eight teachers and two librarians over the past week that they would be laid off for next school year. The cuts were necessitated by the district s financial problems, she said, although it s possible the employees could be reinstated if Maumee voters approve a new 3.9-mill operating levy May 5.

The reduction in force will be revisited with a successful levy, but there are no guarantees at this point that all of the staff will be reinstated, Ms. Sayre said. The goal would be no loss of jobs.

In November, Maumee voters defeated a 5.9-mill levy that would have generated $2.9 million a year. The scaled-back levy request would raise $1.9 million a year, although school officials said that even if it passes, the district still would need to cut $750,000 to $1 million.
