3 rescued from island in Maumee River

Three fishermen who waded onto Blue Grass Island near Side Cut Metropark were rescued last night after rain pushed water levels too high for them to return, Maumee authorities said.

The men, whose names were not immediately available, called for help at about 8:25 p.m. The Maumee Fire Department sent a boat to retrieve them, and boats from Perrysburg and Perrysburg Township also hit the water, Maumee Fire Chief Richard Monto said. No one was injured.

Chief Monto said the department has been in the river four or five times this year to pull people off of islands.

They don t pay attention when it s raining. The river s going to come up, the chief said.
