University of Toledo chief to talk layoffs during town hall session

4/28/2009

University of Toledo President Lloyd Jacobs is expected to detail pending layoffs Tuesday during a regularly scheduled town hall meeting.

The Webcast meeting will be from 11 a.m. to noon. The public can participate by watching at video.utoledo.edu, sending questions to townhallquestions@utoledo.edu, or by calling 419-530-2675.

Dr. Jacobs sent a letter to employees Friday saying that UT will announce layoffs for employees across all campuses. He said the results would be painful and that we will have to say good-bye to friends and colleagues.

UT has laid off more than 180 temporary employees and cut 37 jobs by closing the geriatric psychiatric unit of the University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly the Medical College of Ohio Hospital. It also has a strict process for filling vacancies.

Dr. Jacobs has used town hall meetings to announce changes at the university. The December meeting was the setting for his announcement of layoffs of temporary employees.

He holds town hall meetings at least once a month. Several months ago UT switched to the Internet video format.
