Sylvania Township trustees' decision last month to allocate just $7,000 toward the cost of the Fourth of July fireworks at Centennial Terrace sparked verbal pyrotechnics from Sylvania city council last week. Faced with a nearly $1 million budget deficit next year, Mason Consolidated School officials are weighing significant cuts that could include teacher layoffs and increased athletic fees to play sports. Superintendent David Drewyor last week announced a list of recommendations that were compiled by the district's administrative team to offset a projected $930,646 deficit for the 2009-10 school year.
When Shari Densel returned from a five-week seminar in South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho, she couldn't shake the images of the orphan children. "I worked with those children. It was heartbreaking. I couldn't get them off my mind," she said.
