Man who threatened suicide at I-75 rest stop surrenders to police
4/30/2009MONROE The man whose suicide threat closed northbound I-75 near LaPlaisance Road to traffic Wednesday night surrendered unharmed without incident and his pistol was recovered, according to the Monroe County Sheriff s Office.
The man s name was not released. Deputies did not say why the man was threatening to kill himself.
The man was sitting in a car at the Monroe rest area when he apparently made suicidal threats in a phone conversation with relatives. He was distraught and agitated and had a pistol, officers who were on the scene, said.
Authorities closed northbound I-75 to traffic about 9 p.m. when they also started diverting traffic, with a traffic backup on the expressway for several miles. A negotiator then talked the man, causing him to surrender without incident about 10:45 p.m. Ten minutes later, normal traffic on the road resumed.
The incident remained under investigation by Michigan State Police, which released no further information as of 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
