Nation s mail carriers hold food drive Saturday

5/8/2009

Tomorrow, letters and bills go in the mailbox, and the corn, peas, and stewed tomatoes go right next it.

Letter carriers across the country will collect canned goods and other nonperishable food donations left at mailboxes along their routes in what is described as the nation s largest one-day effort to combat hunger.

This marks the 17th annual National Association of Letter Carriers food drive. The U.S. Postal Service is a major supporter of the food drive.

Last year was the fifth consecutive year the food drive provided more than 70 million pounds of food for the needy. Food collected is donated to local food banks.
