Gasoline prices have spiked by more than 20 cents per gallon during the past week in the Toledo area, reflecting a national trend.

According to gasbuddy.com, the average reported local price for self-service, unleaded regular jumped from about $2.06 per gallon on Monday to about $2.28 per gallon on Wednesday, before tailing off slightly during the past two days.

The average price reported to the Web site Friday was $2.246 per gallon, up 20.9 cents from a week ago. That was also 6.4 cents per gallon higher than the national average of $2.182 per gallon, which in turn was 13.2 cents per gallon higher than it had been a week earlier.

Current prices remain far below where they were last year: The Toledo average price on May 8, 2008, was $3.771 per gallon for regular, while the nationwide average was $3.682.
