Man who was with convicted murderer of Detective Dressel gets 11 years

Sherman Powell, who was with convicted murderer Robert Jobe during the shooting death of a Toledo Police detective, was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Wednesday to a total of 11 years in prison for drug charges and probation violation.

Powell, 21, of 922 Buffalo St., pleaded no contest to one count each of trafficking in cocaine and trafficking in crack cocaine. Two other drug charges were dismissed.

As part of a negotiated deal, Judge Denise Ann Dartt sentenced him to three years on each charge, to run concurrently. She also imposed a consecutive sentence of eight years in prison, which was the time he faced if convicted of violating his community control ordered in November, 2007.

Powell was convicted of selling crack cocaine in early March to police during a controlled buy. The sale occurred at Telegraph and Alexis roads.

At the time of his indictment on the new drug charges, Powell was 15 months into a three-year community control sentence ordered after his conviction on several charges stemming from the February, 2007, night on which Detective Dressel was killed.

Powell was found guilty Nov. 9, 2007, by Common Pleas Court Judge Frederick McDonald of obstructing justice, obstruction of official business, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of crack cocaine, and trafficking in cocaine. He was sentenced to three years of community control, including the nine months he had already served in jail, six months in the correctional treatment facility, and 90 days work-release.

Judge McDonald warned that violation of his community control would lead to up to eight years in prison.

Wednesday, Judge Dartt gave Powell nearly 1 years credit on his prison sentence for time already served.
