Family shocked by man's death, harm to others

The family of a man accused of shooting three neighbors in their home before he was killed by police issued a statement Monday saying they were devastated by the loss of their son and very sorry for the harm he caused.

The statement, following Sunday's shooting on Allendale Drive in North Toledo, was made by Dan Chlebos, a retired police lieutenant from Wisconsin now living in Monroe who identified himself as the Carr family's spokesman.

Meanwhile, three members of the Murphy family remained in two hospitals where they were being treated for their shooting wounds.

John Murphy, 51, who was shot at least four times, was upgraded to serious condition and his wife, Janet, 50, who was shot once, was in fair condition, a spokesman for St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center said.

Their son, Eric, 25, was in critical condition in Toledo Hospital.

The family was shot in their home at 1952 Allendale at about 8 a.m. by their next-door neighbor Richard Dale Carr II, police said. He apparently entered the house and opened fire, making comments about terrorists, police said.

Carr kept police at bay for about 10 minutes before he was fatally shot by a sergeant.
