5/26/2009

An investigation was continuing Monday into the shooting of a motorcyclist by an Ottawa Hills police officer. A spokesman for the Ohio Attorney General s Office declined to release further details.

Mike McCloskey, 24, of Maumee was shot after a traffic stop at Indian Road and Central Avenue early Saturday. He was taken to Toledo Hospital and initially was in serious condition, but a hospital spokesman Monday said she had no information on him.

Mr. McCloskey and another motorcyclist led village police on a chase about 2:15 a.m. when one of the pair drove through a grass island at Central Avenue and stopped. The other motorcyclist was stopped nearby, where he was then shot by an officer, authorities said.

The name of the officer involved in the shooting is being withheld. Police also declined to release the names of the motorcyclists, although family members confirmed Mr. McCloskey had been shot.

Police Chief Bob Overmeyer said the officer was on administrative leave pending review of the shooting. He said the investigation was being done by agents from the Bureau of Identification and Investigation, and he referred all inquires to the Attorney General s Office.

As of Monday, it was unclear which agency would be responsible for releasing information about the shooting.
