Grants awarded to northwest Ohio agencies to cut emissions

Three northwest Ohio agencies have been awarded state grants to buy new equipment in an effort to reduce emissions from diesel-powered vehicles.

In Bowling Green, Wood Lane was awarded a $390,600 grant from the Ohio Department of Development's Diesel Emissions Reduction Grant program to buy five buses that run on liquid propane rather than diesel.

Wood Lane Transportation Coordinator Scott McKeown said the propane-powered buses should cost considerably less to maintain and repair because they do not require the elaborate emissions equipment that is part of all new school buses.

The Wood County Engineer's Office received $109,485 to replace two diesel-powered dump trucks, and the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority was awarded $73,492 to replace a diesel generator.
