BOWLING GREEN - Residents from a handful of homes in a west side neighborhood here were evacuated Wednesday afternoon after an armed man kept police at bay for about two hours.

Police Sgt. Mark McDonough said officers responded to a call about 5 p.m. from a resident who said a man at 16 Arlington Court was exhibiting peculiar behavior.

As police approached the front door of the house, an officer heard what sounded like a shotgun being readied to fire. Police pulled back and called for the Wood County Special Response Team.

When the armed unit arrived, they ordered the evacuation of three other homes on the cul-de-sac and two other adjacent houses.

At the same time, officers started the process of placing a portable telephone inside the home at 16 Arlington. During that process, a team member peered through a garage window and saw what appeared to be a man unconscious lying on the garage floor, Sergeant McDonough said.

The team rushed the garage and handcuffed the man who bore no signs of injury. He was taken to Wood County Hospital.
