Bowling Green councilman leaving for job in Indianapolis

6/9/2009

BOWLING GREEN First Ward City Councilman Gordy Heminger plans to resign his council seat effective July 20 because he s moving to Indianapolis.

Mr. Heminger, a Democrat, said he has taken a job as president and chief executive officer for Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. It was an extremely difficult decision to leave Bowling Green, but it was the right decision for me professionally, Mr. Heminger told the mayor and council in an e-mail.

Mr. Heminger ran unsuccessfully last November for Wood County clerk of courts. In addition to serving nearly two terms on Bowling Green City Council, he also served two terms on Maumee City Council while he was an undergraduate at Bowling Green State University.

The city charter states that vacancies on council be filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of council. If the position is not filled within 30 days of the vacancy, the mayor makes the appointment.
