Nitrates raise concerns about Fremont water

6/11/2009

FREMONT A drinking water warning remains in effect here because of high nitrate levels, despite a reading yesterday that showed a lower level. Officials said municipal water should not be given to infants younger than 6 months because it could make them ill.

Boiling, freezing, or filtering will not reduce the nitrate level. Adults and children older than 6 months can drink the tap water. Anyone who is pregnant, nursing, or has health problems may wish to consult a physician about drinking the water.

Water samples collected June 3 and 4 showed nitrate levels of 11.1 milligrams per liter. The maximum acceptable level is 10 milligrams per liter. A sample collected yesterday was 9.5 milligrams per liter, but the warning will remain in effect until a downward trend is established, officials said.
