Highway access to Clinton to be fixed 425 jobs depend on primary truck route

CLINTON, Mich. - The primary truck route into Lenawee County community of Clinton will be rebuilt this year using a combination of state and local funds, including a state economic-development grant, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced yesterday.

The jobs of an estimated 425 workers at six Clinton industries were at risk because Clinton-Tecumseh Highway's deterioration had prompted the village to consider placing weight restrictions on the road, state officials said. That could have led the companies to close or relocate to preserve their accessibility by truck.

The project, which will include reconstruction and drainage improvements of the highway, is expected to cost $1.6 million, including a $600,000 Transportation Economic Development Fund grant from MDOT and $1 million in local matching funds.

The grant was one of eight, totaling $3.1 million, that the transportation department announced yesterday for projects statewide.
