The leader of the Toledo Police Patrolman's Association accused Mayor Carty Finkbeiner Friday night of again "blowing up" an agreement that the two sides had worked out with the concessions needed to help the budget-beleaguered city out of the red. "As we were finalizing the agreement, Carty called in with two last-minute additions he wanted thrown in," said Dan Wagner, TPPA president.

Nearly a year after Michael Gagnon was sentenced to 43 years in prison for causing the drunken-driving crash that killed a mother and four children, the victims' family has sued him, his family, and the owners of the Oregon bar where he became intoxicated. The suit was filed in Lucas County Common Pleas Court late Thursday by surviving members of the family, including Danny Griffin, Jr., who was driving his family home to Maryland on the night of the crash.

Jaycee Papuchike was minding his own business Friday, snoozing under a tree in a Toledo park, when along comes the long arm of the law or at least, the long arm of Carty Finkbeiner. While touring Maya Park along Emerald Avenue near the Anthony Wayne Trail on his weekly van tour of the city, Mayor Finkbeiner and some of his staffers saw the 35-year-old man sleeping. Megan Robson, Mr. Finkbeiner's spokesman, said the mayor was there because residents near the park have been cleaning up litter, planting flowers, and mowing the grass in preparation for the July 4 holiday. "This gentleman had two outstanding warrants and has been taken into police custody," Mrs. Robson said in a statement.

A 41-year-old Forest, Ohio, man was critically injured early yesterday when his station wagon went off the road and struck a tree about 18 miles southeast of here, the Ohio Highway Patrol said. Anthony Messenger was driving eastbound on Township Road 64, near County Road 175, in Jackson Township when he lost control of the vehicle about 4:30 a.m., troopers said.

Having CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and other diagnostic tests for patients in one city read by radiologists in another is an evolving technological feat. But Mercy Health Partners recently caused an uproar among some local doctors - particularly those at its former longtime provider, Consulting Radiologists Corp. of Toledo - when it contracted with an out-of-town management group that takes a different approach to the use of so-called teleradiology.

Robert Brundage didn't know it, but danger was lurking early Monday evening among the venerable homes and tall trees at the northeast edge of Toledo's historic Old West End. There, near the Collingwood Boulevard intersection with Victoria Place, police say, a 15-year-old brutally attacked Mr. Brundage, 66, as he was riding his bicycle, punching him and knocking him to the ground, then stealing the bike. Mr. Brundage remains in critical condition at St. Vincent Medical Center, unconscious with a broken jaw and bleeding on his brain.
