Sign-ups to begin for Safe-T-City

7/1/2009

Applications are being accepted for this season's Safe-T-City classes to begin Monday.

Sponsored by the Toledo Police Department, Safe-T-City is a free safety program for children about to enter kindergarten.

There is also a section for developmentally delayed children in kindergarten through third grade.

The program includes classroom instruction and outdoor practice in a miniature city set up next to the Scott Park district police station, 2301 Nebraska Ave., which is complete with streets, sidewalks, small buildings, traffic lights, and stop signs.

Local teachers, police officers, and guest speakers will discuss topics such as pedestrian, bicycle, bus, electrical, fire, and water safety.

The classes are designed to teach critical safety skills through songs, poems, art, movies, and interactive participation.

There will be three sessions throughout the summer and parents can choose morning or afternoon classes. They are scheduled for July 6 through 15, July 16 through 27, and July 28 through Aug. 6.

Applications are available at Toledo's three district police stations and on the Web at www.toledopolice.com.
