Meeting on refinery s emissions plan is set

7/6/2009

Plans for installing new process units at the BP-Husky Toledo Refinery in Oregon will be discussed at 6:30 p.m., July 23, at the Lake Erie Center, 6200 Bay Shore Road, Oregon.

Officials of the refinery at 4001 Cedar Point Rd. are seeking to improve its process for reforming a class of hydrocarbon mixtures known as naphtha. Also sought is a new benzene saturation unit.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said the modifications would result in lower overall emissions from the refinery. Releases of particulates, sulfur dioxide, and volatile organic compounds would be higher, but releases of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide would be lower.

The refinery also would be able to meet federal rules for lowering benzene in gasoline products by 2011.

Written comments will be taken by the Ohio EPA and the Toledo Division of Environmental Services through Aug. 4.
