Residents sue to stop school in ex-synagogue

After losing an appeal to the Toledo Board of Zoning Appeals, residents of the Old Orchard Citizens Action Association took their case to Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

The association filed an appeal yesterday against the zoning appeals board and Glass City Academy Inc. It asks the court to overturn the decision to allow the school through a special-use permit.

On June 15, the zoning board denied an appeal of the decision to allow Glass City Academy to piggyback on the special-use permit obtained by Knight Academy for the building at 2727 Kenwood Blvd., a former synagogue. Initial approval of the use was granted by the Toledo Planning Commission.

Glass City is a dropout prevention and recovery school for students age 16-21 in grades 11 and 12. Knight Academy is a charter school for students in sixth through eighth grade.
