BOWLING GREEN - Public school districts in Wood County are in line to benefit from a program to prevent violence and substance abuse, to be funded by a $1.3 million federal grant.

Officials with the Wood County Educational Service Center said the Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant is to run for four years, bringing a total of more than $5 million to Wood County. The agency was one 29 nationwide to be funded under the program, which attracted 422 applicants. It was the only one funded in Ohio.

The grant will pay for a project dubbed SHAPES - Shaping Healthy Atmospheres that Promote Education and Safety - that will involve Bowling Green, Eastwood, Elmwood, Lake, North Baltimore, Otsego, Perrysburg, and Rossford districts.

The proposal was prepared in a collaboration with the schools, Wood County Sheriff's Office, juvenile court, and the Wood County Board of Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services.
