An Ottawa Hills man on Monday was sentenced to 13 months in prison and ordered to repay the government more than $75,000 for embezzling money that would have gone to his deceased mother.

Between Dec. 27, 2002 and Feb. 12, 2009, Jeffrey Scott tried to convert to his own use $75,496 of the federal dependency and indemnity compensation payment due his late mother, Alice Scott, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mr. Scott was earlier convicted on theft of government money. He also was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment and undergo three years of supervised release upon finishing his prison sentence, according to the agency, which said its Office of Inspector General and criminal investigations division investigated the case.

It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Secor of Toledo.
